Somehow I will get better at formatting webpages. It has been 10 years and my expertise is still limited to what I learned from copying "cute layouts" on now-defunct "expage".

I am also hoping that with the new ART REALITY SHOW on the AWARD WINNING BRAVO TELEVISION, more of a spotlight will focus on art/artists/exhibitions/art blogs/specifically THIS art blog. I've always thought it was so easy to sift through the good and bad, in whatever field, as long as you could tell who was full of bullshit. And that's what critiques are for, for calling people out on their bullshit. Some artists are incredible because of their BS, but some are incapable of creating anything other than pure beauty.
I know a few people like these, and when I compare bullshitters to the integrity of these artists, well..

Am still taking a kind of idea-collecting hiatus on art making in the Tuscan region of Italy. Dreadful I know. Actually it did hail today.

Will be visiting a private contemporary art collection at a villa next week, the Castello di Ama. It looks amazing from what I've seen. Pictures to come, dearest readers and loyal companions.

Dear readers, it has been awhile since I've shared any exhibition experiences, so I've set out to do exactly just that today.
Last week was a cluster of art events, owing to the opening of photoLA and LA Art show:
a rather dull gala, a fun evening in a furniture gallery, and a penthouse party downtown (also dull).
6 glasses of prosecco = posing on a metal grill and on a bed in beverly hills furniture gallery.

surprising that none of the guards said anything or made me arrange the grill back to its original position.
well i guess you wouldn't want to stop the only people at a party that were having fun from having fun, right?
also went to the giant robot biennale closing party where cate was a total sweetheart. Liked this the best:

instead of staying we went over to the geffen to reexamine the 30th retrospective.

was amazed to find i'd overlooked tom friedman's work the first time around!!

also i loved how much effort this artist made to try to paint figuratively.
it just looks like the biggest effort ever, but the proportions are still off no matter how hard he tried.
i was so charmed!

This hanging sculpture/microcosm reminded me of things my little brother makes. he's honestly this imaginative
but we tend to lose that imagination as we age. this artist had retained it well though.

Next week is the opening of Art LA contemporary, which everybody is excited about.
Luckily I've been securing VIP passes to all these fairs, so at least the free-flowing alcohol
has made up for the duller events!

5. What books, works of art, and/or persons have inspired your interest in the study of art and why?

Bernard Hermann is one of my largest influences because of the body of work he has completed for some of the best films in history: Vertigo, Citizen Kane, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Psycho.
He was a daring composer, using two therabins for the otherworldly sound in The Day the Earth Stood Still,
writing music for only violins in Psycho because he wanted a “black and white sound to accompany the black and white photography”.
The manner in which he worked – exacting, temperamental, intuitive – is very much like my own taste,
which is partly why I quit choreographing dances in high school.
If dancers couldn’t get a movement down exactly how I wanted it,
I would feel an agonizing hatred for the person’s failure to translate my art.
He gave no excuses for his demands, and wasn't afraid to compose with improvisational methods,
which is what I aspire to in my exploration of art.

Vertigo is one of my favorite films, along with Chris Marker’s Vertigo-inspired La Jetée.
Hitchcock’s drama of romantic obsession, isolation, and death were heightened by Hermann’s compositions:
the slow, daunting, strangely nostalgic string tones.
It’s fitting that Hermann would be the composer for the Twilight Zone and Taxi Driver since he was
the master of mystery and the bizarre in the realm of composition just as Hitchcock was the master within film.
Vertigo inspires my belief in obsession being the ultimate form of desire and loyalty.
Scottie (James Stewart) saves Madeline (Kim Novak) from death, only to watch her plunge to her death twice.
After Madeline dies the first time, Scottie goes into a mental institution and after he is released, visits places they shared.
I admire repetition in art and life, because repetition can only lead to perfection.
It underscores my belief that love can only be tested by death, that only obsessive love can outlast death.
After all, love or libido is the opposite of death, and they are hand in hand in any romantic relationship.
Many of my recent work has been tied to obsession and repetition, partly by romantic experiences and partly by Vertigo’s romanticization of such methods.

The graphic artist Michel Ragabliati also has inspired me to live more sincerely,
to not discount sentimentality as just a housewives’ motif.
His graphic novels depicting the life of Paul from his teenage years to his first child are autobiographical and full of nostalgia,
tenderness, and true human connections.
It leads the reader from Paul’s high school experiences;
frustration with his high school principal to his first attempt at running away from home and realizing the comforts his parents had provided him.
Paul remembers his first printing job, his education at a Montreal design school,
his first time having sex at a summer camp, fishing trips and his girlfriend’s two miscarriages.
Paul isn’t the perfect gentleman throughout, seeing as Ragabliati shares some painful experiences that would embarrass anyone.
However, this is the humanizing aspect a lot of graphic novelists aren’t able to achieve.
With others like David Clowes and Adrian Tomine, it is a constant self hatred or hatred of the world and the experiences that they’ve had to endure.
Ragabliati’s work is wonderfully nostalgic, grateful, and perpetually sweet.

ARTISTS THAT INSPIRE, ART CENTER APP, excerpt:

I love how Tom Friedman turns conceptual art into a humorous joke through his minimalist, mind-boggling objects.
He was one of the first conceptual artists my college art teacher introduced us to, along with the question
"Why might someone sharpen a pencil perfectly, all the way down to the eraser?" to which none of us had an answer.
I'm not sure I have the right answer now, but at least I can come up with one,
which is to show that art is labor, physical and mental.
To sharpen a pencil perfectly down to an eraser must have taken endless tries.
To draw a perfect orange takes endless practice.
To learn to do anything well takes a lot out of a person,
and very few people spend the effort to become an expert at a craft,
whether it is laying paint in arrangements that look lifelike or sharpening a pencil perfectly.
I feel Tom Friedman dissects the universal effort and amplifies it to the effect of confronting the viewer:
"Yeah, this sharpened pencil took me 400 pencils and 20 straight days to get it perfectly sharpened into a spiral.
When, lately, have YOU worked that hard on something (that amounts to nothing in the grand scheme of things)?"
Also, his choice of materials are very similar to mine: humble, industrial, disposable.
Styrofoam and wood. Empty space.
I use styrofoam, foams, and canvas.
The idea that styrofoam or foam are throwaway materials is flawed, because styrofoam never decomposes,
and is bound to last even longer than paint.
If we're judging immortality simply by length of time work will exist, styrofoam will win out over all other materials.

This weekend I went to the MOCA 30th anniversary retrospective w/a friend.
He had gala tickets and had forgotten about them. So instead of attending an art gala, we just saw the show.
(GROAN!)

There were some nice pieces, I saw my favorite piece up by Larry Johnson, this totally absurd sermon-on-the-mount
of absurdities kind of guy.

This couple was so beautiful, as if there was a neon sign buzzing "Perfect Tortured Art School Couple" above them.

Same with this grandfather clothed in my favorite textures of wool and felt, discussing art with his granddaughter.

Beautiful Larry Bell. Seems like all my favorites from MOCA have the same name.

Free as Air and Water

Traveling to NY under the pretense of FW SS2010 in September, I instead attended many an art exhibition, a Cooper lecture and opening in the new building.
Here are a few pictures documenting highlights from the Free as Air and Water exhibition for you, my dearest readers.

My favorite piece of all was the Allora & Calzadilla "Under Discussion", 2005; Single Channel Video with Sound, 6:14.
It's probably the most unique out of all the art I've seen this year. A guy made a speedboat out of an upturned chair and a motor. He rides around on it.
It is the simplest, yet most extraordinary idea. And for him to have executed it perfectly and made/edited a great little film out of it with an underlying sense of complete freedom, well.
I was just blown away by the symbiosis of the simple and complex! The best ideas are often the simplest. Answers too.

Permanent Flux

Lately I've been drawing the same types of objects or same object over and over,
like an institutionalized patient who cannot let go of arbitrary fixations on a certain combination of curves or lines.
Since August, it's been limited to: a keychain, chairs, and anatomy diagrams.
April-July it was antique staplers and a cement mixer.
Perhaps it's the only constant I can count on, thus accounting for obsessive behavior.
If nothing in your life was constant other than what you chose to draw or eat, you'd choose to draw and eat the same things.
At least that is my experience.

Yesterday my friend noticed a similar shape and line in all of my drawings and even handwriting.
I think this is because I am as fluid as time and space. In one moment I can be in
Love, dizzying heights of passion, or devastating emptiness/destruction.

The other evening I received a random opportunity to be filmed by Albert Maysles.
And so I was nude, on a bed while Maysles had me pose for his flip cam. He is quite the frisky man.

Went to the Palais Tokyo today after sidestepping a Free Tibet demonstration

that blocked off a street near Alma-Marceau. Took some pictures and got stared down.

The exhibition was inspired by the HAARP project in Alaska, where scientists test out tons of electromagnetic forces, and this piece specifically borrowed upon Tesla.

I love going to the Centre Pompidou, or Bobo, and examining everything in the book and gift shops rather than seeing exhibitions.

back from nyc. a fantastic, dizzying time had by all. saw my childhood idol (star of titanic) sitting, head ducked, in the same bar.
mmHmm.
went to several exhibitions, not nearly the amount i wanted to see though. it was really strange, as if fate was pitted against me: when i went to the met on monday, it was closed. went to MOMA on tuesday, and it was closed.

anyhow, at the whitney there was a huge retrospective spanning 5 decades, "starting with the universe" with Buckminster Fuller, who "endeavored to see what he, a single individual, might do to benefit the largest segment of humanity while consuming the minimum of the earth's resources." if you'd like an actual introduction to what he created, listen to this podcast:

created very futuristic structures, low-energy consuming housing structures. photos were absolutely forbidden at the whitney, but here are some for your enjoyment.

calder! the whitney had some wire sculptures i'd never ever seen before and i must say they were startling! with one wire he fashioned a circus-trapeze kind of human pyramid. sadly the abnormally large-headed guard caught me snapping away and told me to turn the camera off.

if i ruled the world..

honestly, there was so much amazing stuff i wish i could have photographed, but even with a human blockade there would usually be two guards in front, one in back, and two off to the side. as if protecting the crown jewels, yeesh.

so much impatience for things to get rolling. new york on september 11th, where i'll be staying 2 blocks away from ground zero.
i have already deemed this trip one of "remembrance."
look for me in my flag tshirt carrying "lest we forget" signs.

today we have some special exhibits from tate modern.
this bronze sculpture was huge, at least 50 meters tall. it spoke of creation from nothing other than electricity striking mud, or something along those lines.

here are some amazing collages by cy twombly. ive always hated his paintings, the first of which i saw at the Art Institute of Chicago, but these collages really inspired me for an afternoon of collaging.

there are some really nice textures in these. the sphere adds three dimensionality, the filmy clear paper another interesting element.

yes, i might be a bit obsessed with the tate. however, what is wrong with cataloguing everything of interest from their exhibitions? you can thank me for digging these treasures out of the mines.

next we have an indian folklore exhibition from the British Library. it wasn't much of a library as i couldn't find my cherished babysitters club series. or any tween series for that matter. i know - not much of a library.

they say time doesn't affect those who don't take notice of time. i use this as my philosophy and sole protector against aging mentally/physically.

in the little inn by the atlantic sea, i sat on the edge of the bed in my white robe after having showered twice - twice because i 'failed' the first time, and debated over everything that came to mind with my friend. during and after these debates, i tried to document the rushing thoughts in my 2.9 x 8.3 in. rhodia notebook.

here they are for your enjoyment, dear reader.

Davis: a veranda is a porch alongside the ground floor of a house. This is a balcony.
B: It's a balcony I'm jumping off of, not a veranda. Just for the record.

The tale of the missing comb: we had two black plastic combs brought up to our room by reception. I used one but it disappeared. Looked everywhere for it. Finally found it on the ground by the side of the bed.

I have sensodyne, toothpaste for sensitive teeth. let's save it for later, for when it gets special.

Davis' story about the "hostile" (canadian accent for hostel): he had met some girls from indiana and they said "yeah. we sell car insurance." and i said "oh ok. enjoy your stay."
B and I didn't understand this story because of the voices Davis used/imitated. He had to repeat himself 5 or 6 times and explain explicity that he was imitating the girls, not that he sold car insurance.

b: this marriage isn't working out. look at these towels.
me: but we haven't even consummated the marriage yet!

The Playground Of My Dreams.

chewing gum so hard the left side of my jaw hurt. wasting hours, not noticing the passing of time. listening to music and occasionally remarking about something to b. watching deal or no deal, this tv auction show. also the british version of jerry springer.

argument about whose life is more interesting:
my side was, i think one can't judge whether or not a life is interesting by age because 'interesting' is all relative. by default of having lived more years, i still don't think that is a justifiable argument for thinking one's life is more interesting than another's.

when i'm posing, i never think any sexy thoughts. in my mind there is only ricky gervais. i try to imitate him when he gets on top of the table to pose for the motivational speech people.

something to chew on: if we stay in and eat this stuff everyday, would we not age because time doesn't pay attention to those who don't pay attention to it?

At the V+A museum in london, they had this exhibit on british stage productions and the exact sets for about 50 plays, in miniature. astounding, really.

i love the use of the metal airplane.

i forget for which play this stage was set, but doesn't it look like something out of the depths of the human soul? it's where i imagine portrait of dorian gray to be set.

all these chairs!! think of how many hours it must have taken to arrange life-sized chairs exactly like the miniature.

for some reason while i was in london, i created an event and invited some friends to DO EASY ART's launch.
i came home two nights ago, and the event is tonight.
what have i done to prepare?

but you know, the best things are unplanned things. take children, par exemple.
i could prepare while the guests are here and make that a performance about exhibit preparation. if anyone guesses close to that they can take something from the mystery prize grab bag.

here are some ridiculously amazing artifacts from the Victoria and Albert Museum in london.

a bookshelf!

it was funny for me to see 'artifacts' from the 40s-60s in a museum, because those years don't seem too long ago compared to everything else in the museum from the 17th century and middle ages. i can see 40 years into the future, when blackberries will make their way into exhibits.

there is a permanent artists' book collection, all from one independent publisher. the name escapes me for now but it'll come around.

this one was a spinning book of paradoxes. like..the fox gracefully ravaged the chicken. stuff like that.

while i was taking pictures, this old old french woman came up to me and said "you have to create, not copy, ok?" and i stammered "but i don't copy." and she walked away. the stuff of art student nightmares.

also while i was in london, davis and i went to the ICA, Institute for Contemporary Arts for a performance piece. it turned out to be an unbelievably dull lecture about art marketing and processes. redundant and self explanatory stuff of contemporary art theory, which i will be taking this semester, yay!

this was a machine where you could type anything you wanted - i wrote something fantastic but again, memory is failing at the moment. davis's was "i love you, really."

grasping at wild straws - i thought it might have been something about the constantly evolving process of creating art; an idea at the beginning, an actualization at the end.

but who knows.

while he rambled, this strange little R2D2-esque machine drew with childish simplicity on the chalkboard behind him. i could explain the picture and how it tied into his lecture but i'd fall asleep halfway through.

the opening went surprisingly well. i set up an art station where dear guests had sticky eyes, foam cross stickers, mini paint rollers, sponges, tempera paints, and modeling clay to use at their disposal. we decorated our foam visors and crowns as it was mandatory dress code.

i had help making this spread.

as for my art, i led dear guests on private tours and explained the story and process behind each painting/section of drawings.
everyone chose out of the mystery surprise gift grab bag at the end of tour. gifts included: a candle and a handle, prada condom, several books on alcoholism ("uncle bobby's finally sober," "what happened to joe-and his drinking problem!" aka classic reads), alligator snapper firecrackers and the like.

these were ink/brush form/contour drawings. 4 out of 20 i think.

i love to draw mechanical, manmade objects because of their ingenious, sometimes simple, sometimes complex design. microscopes, lightposts, door handles, slide cutters all fall under this category.

have i mentioned how much i adore the tate modern? if not, i love the tate modern.
here are some highlights from my last trip, a few days ago. i usually spend upwards of 3 hours in there, noticing details i missed the first time or falling asleep while watching deren's meshes of the afternoon for the 503th time.

pretty innovative to put roy and umberto in the same room. by the by, all these photos were forbidden, which speaks volumes about my ninja-speed picture taking.

there was this awesome 'states of flux' exhibit with all the original flux movement documents and kits. there were so many layers to the flux movement that fascinated me. like in the artists' kits, there were instructions printed on tiny index cards and the point was to randomly choose one and carry out the art action i guess.

two or three nights ago, can't remember which, i met someone and he invited me along with him for a trip to brighton, down the english coast.
it was pretty epic to say the least. with wind speeds of 70 nautical m/s and even without the recreational substances....tee hee.

on the seashore there was the most beautiful playground i'd ever seen.
i couldn't have imagined a prettier one, it was absolutely perfect with its polished and rounded edges, curving lines and shapes. cliche to say, but "complex in its simplicity". i dubbed it "the playground of my dreams" for which i was scorned. boys.

seeing this de chirico was like meeting a lifelong idol. thank you tate modern.

i love seeing schoolchildren learning useful things for a change. especially when the art field trips are interactive and they get paints and stickers to play with!

this actually was kind of disorienting. as if both filmmakers were filming you, dear viewer.
